Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) - Determination of alumina (Al2O3) content

Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is a water treatment agent, usually used for coagulation treatment. Its active ingredients are aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) and/or aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The method for determining the content of alumina (Al2O3) in PAC is as follows:

  1. Take a certain amount of PAC sample, add a known amount of dilute acid, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) or nitric acid (HNO3) to neutralize.

  2. An excess of sodium oxalate (Na2C2O4) solution was added to form a precipitate.

  3. The solution was filtered and the precipitate washed, which was dissolved with nitric acid.

  4. Use colorimetry or atomic absorption spectrometry to measure the content of aluminum in the solution, and calculate the content of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) in the PAC.

Beichao reminds you: Different types of PAC may contain different proportions of aluminum hydroxide and aluminum oxide, so the determination method should be optimized and verified according to the actual situation.
