Determination of iron, copper and manganese in pulp, paper and board is usually done using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).
In the AAS method, the metal in the sample is ionized into atoms, and the intensity of absorbed light is measured.
In the ICP-OES method, the metal in the sample is ionized into plasma, and then the spectrum emitted by the plasma is measured. Both methods require pretreatment of the sample, such as dissolution, filtration, dilution, etc.
