The hiding power of Coatings is one of the important parameters to evaluate the coverage and mass of Coatings. Hiding power measures the ability of Coatings to make the underside Color no longer visible after being coated on the underside. This article will introduce the determination method of Coating hiding power, and its related definitions, purposes and meanings.
The hiding power of Coatings can be expressed in two ways: one is to determine the minimum amount of paint required per unit area, expressed in grams per square meter; the other is the minimum wet film thickness required to cover the bottom surface, expressed in microns. The hiding power of Coatings depends on the degree of scattering and absorption of pigments, as well as the difference between the refractive index of pigments and paints. The size and dispersion of pigment particles also affect the covering ability of Coatings. Coatings with high hiding power can paint more area under the same construction conditions.
GB/T 1726 Coating hiding power determination method
Test principle
Apply the Coating evenly and quickly on a black and white spaced Glass plate until the Checkerboard is out of sight. Then weigh the amount of Coating used to get the hiding power (in wet paint film or Dry-Film).
Materials and equipment
Paint brush: width 25~ 35 mm
Glass plate: 100x100x1.2~ 2mm
Wooden camera obscura: 600x500x400 mm
Operation points
Brushing method: Weigh the total weight of the cup and paint brush containing paints on Balance according to the viscosity specified in the product standard. Brush the paints evenly on the Glass plate, place them in the camera obscura, and observe the end point where the Checkerboard cannot be seen. Weigh the remaining paint cup and paint brush together to find the paints weight on the Checkerboard.
Lame plating method: Adjust the sample to a viscosity suitable for lame plating, spray the sample on the Glass plate with delamination, and observe that the Checkerboard is invisible as the end point. Then wipe the paint off the back and edges of the Glass plate. Bake to constant weight according to the specified baking temperature.

The measurement of Coating hiding power is of great significance in Coating production and application:
Quality control: hiding power is one of the key indicators to measure Coating mass, which can ensure that the coating effect of Coating meets the requirements.
Construction effect: The hiding power of Coating directly affects the covering effect and Appearance of Coating after construction.
Product development: Through the measurement of hiding power, the formulation and production process of Coatings can be optimized to improve product performance.
The measurement method of Coating hiding power is one of the important means to measure Coating performance. Through appropriate operation steps and equipment, the hiding power information of Coating can be accurately obtained to guide the production and application of Coating. This is of great significance for ensuring Coating mass, improving construction efficiency and meeting customer needs.
