Study and Determination of Adhesion Resistance of Organic Coatings on Wood Substrates

With the development of the home, furniture and construction industries, wood has become an important raw material among them. In order to protect wood and enhance its durability and aesthetics, it is usually necessary to apply an organic coating to it. However, the stability and durability of the coating is a key factor, especially the anti-adhesion of the coating. This article will explore the anti-adhesion of organic coatings on wood substrates, introduce its determination method, and evaluate it according to relevant standards.

I,The importance of coating adhesion resistance

The adhesion resistance of wood substrate coatings refers to the ability of the coating to resist adhesion to other surfaces and surface changes after long-term compression. This property is particularly important during the storage, packaging and transportation of wood products, as products may be stacked face-to-face or back-to-back, and adhesion between coatings may cause damage. This affects the quality and appearance of the product.

II, the determination method of anti-adhesion

1. Materials and tools

  • Hydraulic pressure gauge: used to maintain a specific pressure.

  • Stencil: hard material, at least 100mm3 in size.

  • Sample: Test coating applied to wood baseplate.

2. Determination steps

  • Select the appropriate wood and prepare the sample according to the expected coating conditions.

  • Stack the samples to ensure that the paint is facing each other.

  • Apply the specified pressure to the sample and maintain a specific temperature and time to ensure that possible adhesion phenomena can be reflected.

  • Remove the pressure and check the surface of the coating for adhesion or impressions. If the coating is not adhered or damaged, then the coating is qualified; otherwise, the coating needs to be further optimized.

III. Evaluation and analysis

Evaluate the adhesion resistance of the coating according to the ASTM D 27931999 (2005) standard. First, pay attention to whether there are unsatisfactory conditions in the coating. For example, adhesion between coating films or impressions on the surface of the coating film. In addition, record and analyze all relevant information of the test, such as the type of substrate, coating method, curing time, coating thickness, test conditions, etc.

IV. Conclusion

The adhesion resistance of organic coatings on wood substrates is key to ensuring that wood products retain their quality and appearance during storage, packaging and transportation. Through standardized assay methods and standards, we can ensure the quality of coatings, which in turn improves the overall quality of products. It is essential for paint producers, furniture manufacturers as well as consumers to understand and ensure the adhesion resistance of coatings.
