Measurement and Standards of Paint Film Gloss

The gloss of a paint film refers to the surface's ability to reflect light in a specific direction when illuminated by light. The gloss of a paint film is an important indicator of its appearance quality and is also related to its service life and performance. When the paint film develops micro-cracks, sags, or ages, the gloss begins to diminish.

According to the national standard GB4893.6 "Measurement of Glossiness of Furniture Surface Paint Films", the gloss value refers to the percentage of the ratio of the amount of regular reflected light on the surface of the paint film to the amount of regular reflected light on the surface of the standard board under the same conditions. The following are some steps and precautions for measuring paint film gloss:

1. Preparation before test:

The photoelectric gloss meter must be charged in advance and once every six months to ensure stable instrument performance.

Check whether the surface of the working standard plate is clean. If there are stains, wipe it gently with cleaning fluid.

Clean the surface of the sample being tested to avoid contaminating the standard plate.

2. Preparation for debugging of photoelectric gloss meter:

Turn on the power switch and select the desired measuring system.

Warm up the instrument for 5 minutes.

Adjust the "Adjust 0" knob so that the display indicates a negative value, and calibrate it on a high-gloss standard plate.

Ensure that the readings of the "0" point and the high-gloss standard plate are stable. If there are changes, they need to be readjusted.

3. Measurement:

Place the probe on the sample plate to be measured and record the reading. Note that the measurement should be carried out along the incident and reflective directions of the light.

Gloss values ​​were measured in three areas of the sample and averaged. After each measurement of the sample, it needs to be calibrated with a standard plate.

Gloss measurement of paint films is one of the important means to ensure the appearance quality of coatings. Through regular gloss measurements, the condition of the paint film can be monitored, possible problems can be identified promptly, and measures can be taken to maintain the appearance and performance of the coating.
