Experimental method and principle of preparing alkyd resin varnishes

Alkyd resin varnish is a common coating with a wide range of applications in woodworking, decoration and surface protection. Understanding its preparation principles and experimental processes is crucial to mastering its application and performance. By in-depth understanding of its experimental purpose, principles, steps and requirements for experimental results, we can better understand the preparation process of alkyd resin varnish and its characteristics.

Experimental principle

The purpose of the experiment on preparing alkyd resin varnish is to understand its preparation principle and to master the varnish preparation process and paint film drying process. The preparation process of alkyd resin paint is based on the formation of peroxide between oxygen and methylene groups adjacent to the double bond under the action of heat or light, which then initiates a polymerization reaction to form a paint film with a cross-linked structure. The main component of alkyd resin is linear polymer, which gradually forms a solid paint film through the reaction of fatty acid roots containing unsaturated double bonds (such as linseed oil, tung oil, etc.) with oxygen in the air. This process is called the drying of the paint film. . The drying process is mainly the formation of peroxide by oxygen and methylene groups adjacent to the double bond under the action of heat or light, which then initiates a polymerization reaction and forms a paint film with a cross-linked structure. Drying agents, such as cobalt naphthenate, zinc, calcium, etc., can accelerate this drying process. However, painting a paint film that is too thick will prevent oxygen from entering and cause slow drying. Adding a variety of driers at the same time can increase the overall drying speed.

Experimental steps

The instruments required in the experiment include beakers, stirring rods, paint brushes and plywood templates. The required reagents mainly include linseed oil alkyd resin (50%), cobalt naphthenate (4%), zinc naphthenate (3%), calcium naphthenate (2%) and solvent gasoline. In the experimental steps, first put the required proportion of linseed oil alkyd resin, various driers, and solvent gasoline into a beaker for preparation, and mix evenly with a stirring rod. The requirements for the finished product include a transparent appearance without impurities, specific viscosity, non-volatile content and drying time.

Note: During the experiment, attention needs to be paid to the uniform mixing when mixing the varnish, the uniform coating when painting the sample, and the safety of the workplace. Questions to consider include why multiple driers need to be added at the same time and why coating too thickly will affect the drying of the paint film.

These experimental steps and principles provide an important reference for understanding and mastering the preparation of alkyd resin varnish. In-depth study of the preparation process of alkyd resin varnish will not only help deepen the understanding of its process principles, but also help explore more new development directions and application prospects in the coating industry.
