Carbon black is an important industrial raw material and is widely used in rubber, ink, paint and other fields. In order to evaluate the quality and performance of carbon black, it is critical to determine its total surface area and external surface area. This article introduces a determination method based on nitrogen adsorption method, aiming to obtain the surface area parameters of carbon black accurately and reliably.

The surface area of carbon black is one of the important indicators of its performance, which directly affects its application in rubber and other fields. Therefore, accurate determination of the surface area of carbon black is of great significance for product quality control and process optimization. The nitrogen adsorption method is a commonly used measurement method. Its principle is to use the properties of carbon black or white carbon black to adsorb nitrogen at liquid nitrogen temperature to calculate surface area parameters.

experimental method

Sample preparation

Depending on the type of sample, different degassing conditions and methods are used. For carbon black samples, degassing is typically performed at a temperature of 300°C, while for silica, processing is performed at 160°C. The degassing time should be determined according to the characteristics of the sample to ensure the stability and accuracy of the sample.

Nitrogen adsorption experiment

Experiments are carried out through a multi-point static volumetric gas adsorption instrument, and the tests are carried out according to the specified relative pressure range. For carbon black samples, the relative pressure is generally in the range of 0.10.5, while for silica it is in the range of 0.050.2. At least five evenly distributed data points must be measured in the experiment to obtain accurate results.

data processing

Based on the experimental data, the Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) theories were used to calculate the nitrogen adsorption surface area and the statistical adsorption layer thickness surface area. The slope of the nitrogen adsorption curve was determined by linear regression analysis, and the surface area parameter was then calculated.

Results and discussion

After experimental measurement and data processing, the nitrogen adsorption surface area and statistical adsorption layer thickness surface area of the carbon black sample were obtained. According to the precision analysis, the results have good repeatability and reproducibility and high credibility. In practical applications, the total surface area and outer surface area parameters of carbon black provide important reference for product design and process improvement.

The nitrogen adsorption method is an effective method for accurately determining the surface area of carbon black and can be applied to the characterization and quality control of various types of carbon black samples. Through the experimental methods introduced in this article, the surface area parameters of carbon black can be obtained quickly and accurately, providing strong support for industrial production.

When measuring the surface area of carbon black, the operator should strictly follow the experimental steps to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the experimental results.
