Research on asphalt brittle point detection method

The Frass brittle point test is a standard test method used to evaluate the brittleness of asphalt materials at low temperatures. By measuring the breaking point of an asphalt sample as the temperature decreases, it helps engineers determine the suitability of the material for cold environments. The test is performed using specialized instruments and requires samples to be prepared under specific conditions, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility of results. This detection method is of great significance in road construction and material selection.

Purpose of detection

This method is designed to determine the frass brittle point of asphalt materials to help evaluate the performance of bitumen at low temperatures to ensure its reliability and durability in cold climates.

Fields of application

This detection method is suitable for all kinds of asphalt materials, and is widely used in road construction, construction engineering and related industries to ensure the effectiveness and safety of materials under different temperature conditions.

Technical requirements for equipment and materials

Frass brittle point meter

Instrument composition

  • Bender – consists of two concentric round tubes, made of hard glass or other insulating material, with a gap between the clamps for insertion into the thermometer.

  • Thin sheet of steel – made of stainless steel with good elasticity to ensure no deformation when bending repeatedly.

  • Cooling unit – consists of a large test tube and a double-walled cylindrical glass cylinder for the cooling process.

Other necessary materials

  • Thermometer – with a range of -38°C to +30°C and a graduation value of 0.5°C.

  • Coolants – such as dry ice or other coolants.

  • Industrial alcohol, balances, electric stoves, etc.

Methods and Steps:

Preparation

A 0.4g asphalt sample is weighed on a clean sheet of steel and evenly coated on the surface of the sheet by heating to form a smooth film. Air bubbles should be avoided during the preparation process and the sample should be kept clean.

Test procedure

  • The sheet of steel coated with asphalt film is slightly bent and loaded into the bender.

  • Place the bender in a large tube and insert the thermometer, then place the tube in the cooling unit and cool down slowly.

  • When the temperature is close to the brittle point, start rotating the rocker at a speed of 60 revolutions per minute until a crack appears in the thin steel sheet, recording the temperature at this time as the brittle point.

Results are reported with allowable errors

At least three parallel tests are performed on the same specimen, and the average of the three measurements with an error in the range of 3°C is taken as the final result, and the final result is reported as an integer.

Allowable error

According to the regulations, the permissible error of the repeatability test is 2°C.

summary

Through the Frass brittle point test, the performance of asphalt materials in low temperature environments can be effectively evaluated to ensure its reliability in practical applications. This inspection method not only provides systematic operating procedures and standardized equipment requirements, but also takes into account test accuracy and error control, thus providing a scientific basis for material selection in road construction and other related fields. By continuously improving the detection technology, we can further improve the safety and durability of asphalt materials.
