Four key factors affecting the fineness of measurement

Coating products have set product quality indicators according to different varieties, such as transparency, viscosity, fineness, gloss, impact, elasticity, etc. In a product, these quality indicators are a unity, they affect each other and sometimes contradict each other. This article is about the understanding of paint fineness. Fineness is the dispersion of particles such as pigments, fillers and mechanical impurities in paints and paint pastes, expressed in microns (μm).

The method we use every day is the scraper method, which is fast in measurement and the test data is relatively accurate. The specifications of the scraper Fineness Meter are 0-50μm, 0-100μm, and 0-150μm; there are three types: single-slot and double-slot. Generally, single-slot scraper Fineness Meters of 0-50μm and 0-100μm are used. The error caused by the instrument itself is relatively large, so it is not used. Other micrometer methods and sieving methods are also rarely used.

Factors affecting the fineness of the measurement:

1. Wipe the instruments used before measuring the fineness to prevent the interference of foreign impurities. During measurement, the sample should be fully stirred to prevent sampling errors.

2. The viscosity of the tested sample is inversely proportional to the fineness. The smaller the viscosity, the easier the particles will be exposed, and the fineness will be poor. Therefore, when we measure the fineness of the paint slurry, we should pay special attention not to adjust it too thin, so as not to cause human errors

3. Pay attention to the volatilization speed and reading time of the solvent. If the solvent of the tested sample evaporates quickly and the reading is not timely, the particles will quickly protrude due to the volatilization of the solvent, and the measured fineness results will be poor. Therefore, we require the reading to be completed within 5 seconds.

4. The scraper Fineness Meter we use every day has high hardness of the board surface, and the scraper is soft and easy to wear, so it should be corrected regularly. After measuring the corrosive paint sample, clean it in time to prevent the paint from corroding the board surface. The standard fineness plate for calibration should be coated with anti-rust oil and stored for next use.

Paint fineness is one of the inherent qualities of paint products. Correct determination of fineness can ensure the quality of the product. On the contrary, if the paint is qualified, the measured data due to improper measurement methods will not be qualified and rework will result, which will not only waste manpower and electricity, but also increase losses.
