What is acrylic resin?

The resin synthesized with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid as the main raw material is called acrylic resin.

The main chain of acrylic resin is a carbon-carbon bond (bond energy 245.3k]/mol), which is very stable to light, heat, acid and alkali. The paint film made of it has excellent outdoor weather resistance, gloss and color retention good. Acrylic paint is widely used in various industries such as vehicles, machinery, household appliances, and instrumentation equipment due to its excellent performance.

There are three types of acrylic resins used in the paint industry: solvent-based, water-based and solvent-free.

There are two main categories of solvent-based resins, namely, thermoplastic acrylic resins without any active functional groups and thermosetting cross-linked acrylic resins with certain active functional groups. Most thermoplastic acrylic resins are mainly methacrylic monomers, supplemented by monomers such as styrene and acrylic acid. The macromolecules of thermosetting cross-linked acrylic resins contain certain active groups, such as hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups, sulfonyl groups, siloxane groups, etc. These active groups can interact with the corresponding curing agent after coating. joint reaction to form a film.

Water-based acrylic resins can also be divided into thermoplastic and thermosetting crosslinking types. Thermoplastic acrylic resin mainly includes acrylic emulsion, which is commonly known as pure acrylic, and also includes acrylic-styrene emulsion (styrene-acrylic). Cross-linked acrylic acid includes acrylic emulsion, water-diluted acrylic acid, and water-soluble acrylic acid.

Solvent-free acrylic resins mainly include photosensitive acrylic resins and acrylic resins for powder coatings. Photosensitive acrylic resins are available in UV-curable and radiation-curable types, and acrylic resins for powder coatings mainly include epoxy-based acrylic resins and sulfonyl-containing acrylic resins.
