A pinhole Detector is a non-destructive inspection instrument used to detect defects in coating systems, including the detection of discontinuities in coating systems, including pinholes, cracks, and thin spots. Pinhole Detectors are also known as porosity Detectors, continuity Testers, sponge Testers and leak Detectors.
There are two types of pinhole Detectors: low pressure (wet sponge) and high pressure (spark Detector). Low pressure Testers, such as the PosiTest LPD, are commonly used for coating systems less than 500μm (20mils) thick. The working voltage of the high-voltage spark Detector is as high as 35000V. If it is not operated properly, it will seriously injure the operator and damage the coating. Such spark Detectors are more expensive and complex than low pressure sponge pinhole Detectors.
