How to tell if the hygrometer is calibrated?

A properly calibrated Moisture Meter is a desired tool for professionals in all walks of life: farmers storing hay, home inspectors, restoration professionals, and more. A reading of just a few percent can cause serious problems, so the equipment needs to be completely reliable. No professional can risk the integrity of a hay harvest or miss moisture in building materials by failing to verify tool calibration.

Hygrometers without built-in calibration checks

Some hygrometers, such as Delmhorst's BD 2100 and F2000, have built-in calibration checks. This internal feature allows you to easily monitor the calibration of your hygrometer and detect problems early. However, not every hygrometer comes with a built-in check. If there is no built in check, the meter needs to be tested in another way. Moisture content standards provide a quick and reliable method to verify the accuracy of Moisture Meters without built-in calibration checkpoints.

Typically, hygrometers with built-in calibration checks provide only one check point. While this is useful and gives the user confidence in his tool, many professionals want to go a step further to ensure the quality of their readings. Moisture content standards provide one or more additional checkpoints to assure professionals that the Moisture Meter is fully calibrated. 

For example, the Hay Moisture Meter F2000 has a built-in calibration check of 12%. However, the moisture content standard also provides 16% and 22% check points, providing greater confidence. For the BD 2100, the moisture content standard will verify the meter's built-in check to 12% and provide an additional check point of 22%. Each standard applies to a specific range of meter calibrations.

What if my meter is out of calibration?

If the moisture content standard shows that your Delmhorst Moisture Meter is out of calibration, first replace the batteries. If the meter is still not calibrated with new batteries, you can easily send it to Delmhorst for repair.
