Spray-applied bedcover coatings are commonly used in the automotive and defense industries to provide protection from physical impact, chipping, abrasion and corrosion due to exposure, while also adding slip resistance. These coatings typically consist of 100% polyurethane, 100% polyurea, or a mixture of polyurethane and polyurea layers and are applied to truck chassis made of steel or aluminum. There are already several manufacturers of spray primer coatings on the market, including LINE-X™, Rhino Linings™, Bullet Liner™ and ArmorThane™.
Before painting begins, the entire truck bed surface is cleaned and sanded to ensure a strong bond can be formed. Other preparations include removing the tailgate and other parts as needed, and masking the exterior to prevent overspray. Using the nozzle in a well-ventilated area, spray the protective coat in long sweeping motions and allow to dry between coats.
To meet coating thickness requirements, multi-layer liners are applied to all surfaces of the truck bed. A final texture coat can be applied to any coated areas that are too rough or too smooth. This ensures an even texture and sufficient slip resistance even in wet conditions. After a short curing time, the protective underlining is ready for loading.
Bedspread coatings are usually applied in the range of 3-6 mm (125-250 mils) thick. It is important to apply enough coating so that the total thickness is within the range specified by the coating manufacturer. Insufficient lining thickness can lead to premature failure of the coating, which can expose the truck chassis to corrosion. Going beyond the thickness recommended by the manufacturer is a waste of time and money. Therefore, in order to ensure good performance and save cost, an instrument capable of accurately measuring the thickness of cured mattress is needed.
The PosiTector 6000 Coating Thickness Gauge is an excellent choice for measuring the thickness of spray primer coatings used on steel and aluminum truck floors. Specifically, the PosiTector 6000 FT and PosiTector 6000 FTS instruments utilize magnetic principles to measure and display the total thickness of the lining applied to the steel bed. The PosiTector 6000 FNTS model uses magnetic and eddy current principles to accurately and quickly measure floor thickness applied to steel or aluminum truck floors. Given the growing popularity of aluminum beds, the PosiTector 6000 FNTS provides a complete solution for sprinklers.
