不挥发分或称固体分指的是涂料组分中经过施工后留下成为涂膜的部分，它的含量高低对形成的涂膜的质量和涂料使用价值有直接关系。现在为了保护环境，减少挥发有机物对大气的污染，国际上提倡生产高固体分涂料。测定不挥发分含量应该属于涂料组成的分析项目，通常把它列为对涂料状态的检测项目。测定不挥发分常用的方法是加热烘焙以除去蒸发成分。各国标准略有不同，基本原理都是一样的。将涂料在一定温度下加热烘焙，干燥后剩余物质量与试样质量比较，以百分数表示。
我国国家标准GB/T 1725- -2007 《色漆、清漆和塑料不挥 发物含量的测定》规定的检测方法是用玻璃培养皿和玻璃表面皿，在鼓风恒温烘箱中测定。等效采用国际标准ISO1515- -1973《色漆和清漆挥发 物和不挥发物的测定》的国家标准GB/T 6751- 1986 中，规定可用玻璃、马口铁或铝质的直径约75mm的平底圆盘，也可在鼓风恒温烘箱中进行。温度规定为105°C土2°C，烘焙3h。GB/T 1725- -2007标准中规定了对不同品种涂料的取样数量、烘焙温度，烘焙时间为30min。如产品标准对烘焙温度与时间有规定时，则按产品标准规定进行。
目前还流行一种快速测定法，即将试样置于10cmX15cm的铝箔(或锡箔) 上，立即折叠称量，然后打开放人恒温烘箱。此法中试验量大为减少(约取样0.2~0. 5g)，涂层厚度减薄，因此焙烘时间也大大缩短。
