What is the difference between emulsion and dispersion?

Emulsions and dispersions share similar characteristics, but it is important to understand their differences.

An emulsion is a homogeneous mixture of two immiscible liquids, namely oil and water. Oil in water is characterized by humectants and the like. An example of water in an oil emulsion is sunscreen.

A dispersion is when small water-insoluble particles are mixed in a liquid. They need to go through a robust mixing process that incorporates the small particles into a liquid base so that they remain suspended in a homogenous mixture.
