What is the role of packaging testing?

Packaging testing technology is a science and technology that studies the performance testing and analysis of packaging materials, packaging containers and packages. It is used to test the performance of packaging materials and packaging containers and evaluate the performance of packages in the circulation process. It not only includes performance testing and analysis of packaging materials, packaging containers and packages, but also includes various packaging test methods.

The purpose of the packaging test is to evaluate the quality and results of the packaging, that is, to check whether the protective performance of the package is good under certain circulation conditions; to investigate the possible damage of the package and to study the cause of damage and preventive measures; to compare different packaging The advantages and disadvantages of the package; check whether the performance of the package, the packaging materials used, and the packaging container comply with the relevant standards, regulations and laws. The main role of packaging testing can be summarized into three aspects.

(1) Predict packaging performance and evaluate packaging functions

Through the corresponding packaging test, predict the performance of the package, and evaluate the protection ability of the packaging material and packaging container to the contents. For example, in the use of composite plastic moisture-proof packaging and fresh-keeping packaging, it is necessary to test and analyze the air permeability, moisture permeability, adhesive strength, heat-sealing strength, and pinhole resistance of the composite film. In the design of the transportation packaging system, it is necessary to study the static compression characteristics, dynamic cushioning characteristics, creep and recovery characteristics, vibration transmission characteristics of the cushioning material or structure, the carrying capacity of the packaging container, and the compression, impact and vibration resistance of the package, etc. Perform test analysis.

For another example, in the process of developing dairy product packaging materials and structures, it is necessary to test and analyze the permeability, tensile properties, bursting strength, tearing degree, puncture strength, hygienic properties, compressive strength, and heat seal strength of packaging materials. , but also need to test and analyze the sealing performance, compression performance, drop shock/vibration performance of packaging structures (such as packaging bags, Tetra Pak).

(2) Control the quality of packaging products and product packaging

Predicting packaging performance can make the designed or improved packaging meet the specified performance requirements, but this is not the whole of packaging quality control. Only by controlling the quality of each batch or each packaged product delivered from the factory can the produced packaging be guaranteed. Meet the requirements of relevant standards or specifications. For example, in the beer filling process, the detection and control of physical parameters such as gas pressure, liquid flow, and sterilization temperature are important conditions to ensure the quality of beer packaging. In general, fewer packaging test items are required in the control of packaging quality, and the test method is relatively simple, but the test speed is required to be fast and the results are obvious, and generally it is only necessary to judge whether it is qualified or not. Sometimes a quantitative result is also required.

(3 ) Obtain packaging improvement information

As the distribution environment, loading and unloading machinery or the performance of the packaging product itself change, the original packaging may no longer be suitable for the new use requirements, which requires improvement of the packaging. Improving packaging includes two aspects. One is to enhance the protective function of packaging and reduce packaging damage during circulation; the other is to reduce some unnecessary packaging functions, eliminate over-packaging or exaggerated packaging, and reduce packaging costs. In both cases, strict packaging tests should be carried out to analyze the possible damage caused by the packaging, study its causes, and take corresponding preventive measures.

For example, after World War II, the United States used asphalt paper tubes to pack ammunition to good effect. But during the Vietnam War, the asphalt paper tubes had problems. Due to the high humidity and high temperature in the Vietnamese jungle, the asphalt paper tubes swelled due to moisture. Not only the paper tube could not be opened, but also the ammunition deteriorated due to moisture. To this end, the U.S. military has done a lot of experiments, and has successively adopted various improvement schemes such as sandwiching aluminum foil layers in paper tubes, moisture-proof bags for ammunition in paper tubes, and moisture-proof bags for paper tubes, and finally solved the moisture-proof effect of asphalt paper tubes on ammunition. issues, and revised military standards.

Another example is that the packaging of cameras in our country was originally made of wooden boxes, and the phenomenon of theft during transportation was very serious. Later, container transportation was used to solve the problem of theft. However, the number of times wooden boxes are transported after the container is used is less, and the camera is less affected by shock and vibration during the circulation process. At this time, it is unnecessary to still use wooden box packaging, and excessive packaging has appeared. Through the test, it is proved that the corrugated box can fully meet the requirements. This not only makes the packaging more beautiful and elegant, but also reduces the packaging cost.
