Paint specific gravity detection method

Coating Density refers to the ratio of the density of a coating to its volume. Paint specific gravity is usually expressed in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) or pounds per gallon (lb/gal). The specific gravity of the paint directly affects the covering ability, flatness and thickness of the paint. In addition, the specific gravity of the coating also affects the construction performance and service life of the coating. Therefore, it is very important to choose an appropriate paint specific gravity to obtain a good paint effect.


Detection method

The detection of specific gravity of paint usually uses two methods:


Gravimetry: Using an accurate analytical balance, an empty glass or metal block is weighed, the paint is applied to this substrate, and weighed again. Paint specific gravity = (weight after paint - weight before paint) / volume of paint.

Specific gravity cup method: This is a test method using the relationship between specific gravity and density of paint. You need to use a specific gravity cup, add a certain amount of paint into it, and then measure the volume of paint. Specific gravity of paint = mass of paint/volume of paint.

When selecting a detection method, factors such as the nature of the coating, detection accuracy, and detection cost need to be considered to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. Generally, coating laboratories use the specific gravity cup method for testing.
