[Film Properties and Measurements] - Determination of film resistance to saline water

The measurement of coating salt water resistance is a method to evaluate the stability of coatings in brine media. It is mainly used to test the durability and brine resistance of coatings in brine media.

The determination of the salt water resistance of the coating film is usually tested using a salt spray Test Chamber, which can simulate the salt water medium and test the durability and salt water resistance of the coating in the salt water. In the salt spray Test Chamber, the coating sample is placed in a constant high temperature, high humidity and salinity environment for a certain period of time. During the test, the changes in properties such as appearance, color, adhesion, weight and hardness of the coating sample are detected to evaluate the salt water resistance of the coating.

The measurement of coating salt water resistance can be used to evaluate the durability and stability of various types of coatings, such as automotive paints, architectural coatings, marine coatings, etc. By measuring the performance changes of coatings in brine media, the durability and life of coatings can be predicted, providing basic data for formulating coating maintenance and improvement programs.

The following are the steps for measuring the salt water resistance of the coating film:

  • Sample Preparation: Prepare the sample coating to be tested and apply the coating evenly on the standard test plate.

  • Preparation of brine solution: Prepare a certain concentration of brine solution according to the test requirements. Typically, a 5% NaCl (sodium chloride) solution is used with a pH value between 6.5 and 7.2.

  • Test conditions: Place the test plate at room temperature for 24 hours, then soak it in a saline solution, usually at 35 ℃ for 4 to 7 days. Test time can vary according to test requirements.

  • Observation and Evaluation: Take out the test plate and clean it to see if there is any corrosion or peeling on the surface of the coating. The better the coating performs, the better its salt water resistance.

In order to ensure the accuracy of the test results, multiple tests are required, and the test conditions, such as brine concentration, test time and temperature, need to be adjusted according to the test requirements.

The determination of salt water resistance is usually to immerse 2/3 of the test plate in 3% sodium chloride aqueous solution, take it out and check it according to the specified time of the product. In addition, according to the national standard "GB1763- (79) 88 Lacquer Film Chemical Reagent Resistance Determination Method", the heating and salt water resistance method can also be used. The test temperature is (40 ± 1) ℃ and is controlled by a set of constant temperature equipment.
