The viscosity of a substance is expressed as the time it takes for a certain volume of measured liquid (usually 100 ml) to flow out of a cup with a specified spout diameter. The flow time is measured by means of a stopwatch.

Test procedure: Immerse the cup in its entirety into the substance to be measured and fill the cup completely. Then quickly lift the cup while pressing the stopwatch. The time it takes for the contents of the cup to completely drain is measured in seconds, and the time recorded at the moment when the spout is visible from top to bottom is the time at the end point. Care needs to be taken to keep the cups vertical during the test.
