Erichsen419 levelling Sag Tester Picture

Test principle of ERICHSEN419 advection sagging Tester:

A special paint applicator made of stainless steel with grooves of different heights is used to apply parallel wet film strips to the substrate.
Sag performance is determined by a vertical flow test and leveling performance is determined by a horizontal specimen that can be visually inspected after the coating has cured.

Type 419Leveling and Sag TesterFeatures

There are small grooves cut on both sides of the applicator frame
- There are 5 pairs of grooves for the leveling test, and the width of each groove, the distance between the two grooves and the distance between each pair of grooves are preset (Fig. 1b).
- The height of each pair of slots is graded in multiples, from 250 mm to 4 mm.
- The pull-drag edge used for the sag test has 10 slots (Fig. 1a) in 25 mm increments, from 75 mm to 300 mm.

The leveling test is in accordance with ASTM D 28011).
Use the leveling test to drag the drag strip out of the wet film strip on the specified substrate. When the sample hardens in the horizontal position, the number of two coatings that are impregnated with each other is determined.

Design

There are a total of 24 grooves on the 4 sides of the applicator (Fig. 2), as in the case of Type 419 - ASTM standard, the width of the grooves and the distance between the grooves are preset. The height of the trough varies from 75 mm to 1300 mm.
The vertical sag test is in accordance with DIN 55 677.
The wet film strip is applied to a standard steel template. After coating, the sample is placed vertically (the wet film strip flows over the pattern, and the thinnest strip is at the top). The coating allows drying, and a proper Thickness Gauge is used to measure the thickness of the thickest coating that has not been damaged by sagging action, which will serve as a flow index of vertical fluidity.
