Principle

Digital ultrasonic Thickness Gauges determine the thickness of a part or structure by generating short ultrasonic pulses from the sensor, passing from the outer surface through the interior of the material, reflecting off the back or inner surface, and returning to the sensor and accurately measuring the time required for this process.

The measured two-way transit time is divided by 2 to calculate the downpass and reflected propagation paths, which are then multiplied by the speed of sound in the material.
