Cadmium Combined Ion Selective Electrode (ISE)
HI4103 is a solid-state combined ion selective electrode (ISE) for the determination of cadmium (Cd2+) in solution. Mixed cadmium sulfide/silver sulfide sensing particles undergo potential changes due to cadmium ion exchange between the inorganic particle membrane and the sample. The internal sensing element is housed in a durable polyetherimide (PEI) body. HI4103 is a reliable choice for electroplating, battery construction, and a variety of applications in the lab.

The HI4103 cadmium ion-selective electrode is a complete potentiometric cell containing a silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference material housed in a PEI plastic with a potassium nitrate electrolyte. The internal elements are separated from the sample by a compressed cadmium/silver sulfide sensing membrane.
Hanna's solid-state combination ISE features a tapered knot design, the sensor's base-cone geometry forms a liquid junction with the test solution at the junction cone tip, resulting in a highly stable reference potential and consistent flow rate of electrolyte into the solution, allowing the electrolyte fill solution to be easily emptied and replaced if necessary with a simple press on the top of the ISE.
For the HI4103 to accurately measure cadmium, it is important to adjust the ionic strength of the standard and sample to a high and constant value using the HI4000-00 Ionic Strength Regulator (ISA) solution. The ISA ensures that the activity coefficient is constant, so the concentration of free cadmium ions can be measured. Measuring all solutions with constant ionic strength reduces the margin of error between measurements. The HI4103 cadmium solid-state ISE can measure from 0.1 μM (0.01 mg/L) to 0.1 M (11,200 mg/L).
