The ASTM D5994-2010 standard provides a method for nondestructive measurement of the coating Film thickness of steel pipes. This method is suitable for measurement of drying, nonmagnetic coatings on the outer surface. It is recommended for pipes with a coating thickness of up to 6 mm (0.240 in), and any pipe with a diameter of not less than 10 mm (0.5 in). It is not suitable for coatings that are susceptible to deformation under the force applied by the measuring instrument probe. Measurement accuracy may be affected by the deformation of the coating. Users need to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
