ASTM C448-88 (2021) is a standard test method for determining porcelain enamel abrasion resistance. This method is suitable for various types of porcelain enamel, including but not limited to oven porcelain enamel, bathtub porcelain enamel, etc. The standard specifies two test methods: one is the Taber abrasion method, and the other is the Los Angeles abrasion method. Taber abrasion is performed by using two swirl/spin grinding wheels on the surface of the porcelain enamel to evaluate the abrasion resistance of the porcelain enamel. The Los Angeles abrasion rule evaluates the abrasion resistance of porcelain enamels by adding specific gravel and water to the porcelain enamel in a swirl/spin steel cylinder. These two test methods are applicable to all types of porcelain enamels and provide reliable abrasion resistance testing data to inform the design, production, and use of porcelain enamels. It is worth noting that these two standard methods provide only one test method and do not fully evaluate the abrasion resistance of porcelain enamels. Therefore, when using these two standard methods, Miscellaneous factors such as the use scenario of porcelain enamel, life expectancy, etc. need to be combined for comprehensive evaluation. In addition, the standard has been revised in 2021 to cover more testing details and requirements.
