The ASTM E1171-15 (2019) standard specifies methods for testing PV modules in a cyclic temperature and humidity environment. The standard defines three independent environmental test procedures: the thermal cycle procedure, the humidity freeze cycle procedure, and the extended duration heat and humidity procedure. During the thermal cycle, electrical bias is utilized to simulate known stresses in field deployment modules. These test methods are designed to accelerate the evaluation of performance degradation of PV modules under actual use conditions. It is important to note that the results of these tests are for comparison and sequencing purposes only in the laboratory and cannot be used to directly extrapolate actual disposal expectations or predictions. In addition, degradable plastics that are exposed to heat and humidity environments undergo a variety of physical and chemical changes, and the time of exposure, temperature, and humidity levels determine the degree and type of change. Therefore, when conducting heat and humidity aging tests, a variety of factors should be considered to comprehensively evaluate the performance of plastics.
