ASTM D974-14 uses the Color Indicator Titrimetric method to determine acid values and base numbers in petroleum products and lubricants. This method is suitable for acid or base components with a dissociation constant greater than 10% in water, and extremely weak acids or bases with a dissociation constant less than 10% will not interfere. For testing, the sample should be soluble in a mixed solvent of toluene and Isopropanol. The acid value and base number represent the milligrams of potassium hydroxide required to neutralize the acid or alkaline components in the sample, respectively. This standard provides an important test basis for the quality control and performance evaluation of petroleum products and lubricants, especially in evaluating the corrosiveness and stability of oil products.
