The TAPPI T 403 standard specifies a test method for determining the burst strength of paper. It is suitable for flat paper with a burst strength between 50 kPa and 1200 kPa (7 psi to 175 psi) and a thickness not exceeding 0.6 mm. During the test, the specimen is fixed between annular clamps and hydraulic pressure is applied at a controlled rate using a rubber membrane until the specimen ruptures. The maximum pressure before rupture is recorded as the burst strength. This method is widely used to evaluate the rupture resistance of a variety of papers such as newsprint, Encasement paper, printing paper, etc., but is not suitable for materials such as corrugated fibreboard, fiberboard, liner or cardboard that may damage the thin rubber film.
