This guide provides standard methods for measurement of metallic and inorganic Coatings thickness, including electrodeposition, mechanical deposition, vacuum deposition, anodic oxidation, and chemical conversion coatings, among others. Thickness measurement is critical to coating performance, so most coating specifications will specify thickness requirements. The methods described in the guide are suitable for acceptance testing, but each method has its limitations in terms of the type of coating and its thickness. The guide does not cover all tests for special applications, and only applies to test methods within the scope of the ASTM standard.
