The ASTM F 2638-22 standard test method provides an alternative for evaluating the microbial barrier performance of porous Encasement materials. This method avoids traditional microbiological testing by creating 1.0 μm particulate aerosol and using a single or double particle counter to measure the filtrate efficiency of the material. Linear dispersion of the filtrate efficiency of the material is determined during the test and inter-material comparisons are made by the maximum permeability parameter. This method is based on research by Tallentire and Sinclair and enables rapid quantitative measurement of the microbial barrier performance of the material. It is suitable for porous materials of Encasement final sterilized medical apparatus.
