This standard specifies test methods for chromate conversion coatings on the surfaces of zinc, cadmium, aluminum-zinc alloys and zinc-aluminum alloys. The standard applies to chromate conversion coatings that are not coated with any additional layer (e.g. oil film, water-based or solvent polymer film or wax film), as well as colorless and coloured chromate conversion coatings generated by chemical or electrochemical methods. The standard is mainly used to evaluate the mass and performance of surface preparations of these materials.
