This standard specifies techniques for the determination of the total carbon content of cemented carbide by high frequency combustion infrared absorption method and thermal conductivity method. It is suitable for the determination of carbon content of refractory metal carbide such as tungsten, tantalum, niobium, chromium, vanadium, titanium and their mixtures in the range of 4.00% to 20.00%. The sample is burned in a high frequency induction furnace in an oxygen stream to generate carbon dioxide, which is determined by infrared or thermal conductivity detection cell. This method provides an accurate technology for the determination of total carbon content, which is suitable for the quality control of cemented carbide materials.
