This standard defines a procedure for assessing the degree of coating chalking using the velvet method. This method is suitable for chalking tests of white or coloured coatings on rough surfaces, including mineral substrates such as fibre cement and concrete. This method provides an effective technique for laboratory and field evaluations for determining the chalking grade of coatings. The method described in the standard is suitable for a variety of surface structures, but for assessments on smooth surfaces the method in ISO 4628-6 is recommended.
