GB/T 1722-1992 "Estimation of colour of varnishes, boiledoils and thinners" is a national standard for the determination of Color in transparent liquids. It mainly specifies two visual Colorimetric methods. The first is iron-cobalt Colorimetry, which is used to compare the sample to be tested with a series of standard iron-cobalt color scale solutions, and finally represents the color grade by the color scale number. The second is LOVIBOND Colorimetry, which uses the LOVIBOND Tintometer to Basis Weight to characterize Color by combining red, yellow and blue primary color filters with the sample for Color Matching. Specialized testing instruments required for both methods are detailed in the standard, including the Iron-Cobalt Tintometer, a specific size Glass testtube, an artificial Daylight Color Assessment Cabinet or a wooden camera obscura, and the LOVIBOND Tintometer and accompanying different optical path Sample chambers. The standard applies to Color determination of varnish, clear oil and thinners products, and its current status was reviewed in 2023 and confirmed to continue to be valid.
