The standard specifies a method for determining the volume of non-volatile matter in Coatings to evaluate the dry-film thickness of coatings. The measurement results can be used to compare the coverage of different Coatings products, i.e. the surface area that the Coating can cover per unit volume of dry-film thickness. The standard states that the measured value may differ from the theoretical volume of the raw material, as the volume of the Resin solution may vary due to the interaction of the solvent with the Resin. The spatial configuration and degree of filling of the pigment particles can also affect the final dry coating volume. The method is suitable for a variety of Coatings, but not for radiant curing materials or chromadizing Coatings.
