This standard specifies a test method for determining the environmental stress cracking (ESC) performance of plastics by bending the strip method. The constant prestrain test is used to evaluate the development of stress-induced crazing in a specific environment. The method is suitable for flake and flat plastic samples, especially to evaluate the cracking sensitivity of local areas of the surface. During the test, the specimen is clamped on a fixed radius strip and its crazing is observed under predetermined environment conditions. Finally, the ESC performance of the specimen is assessed according to the crazing and failure strain of the specimen. This method is particularly suitable for evaluating the cracking resistance of hard plastics under moderate stress conditions.
