The ability of a surface to reflect light without scattering is known as glossiness. Glossiness is measured by emitting a beam of constant intensity at a fixed angle to the surface being measured, and then monitoring the amount of light reflected at the same angle, represented by a GU value (gloss units).
The reflectance angle required to measure gloss is dependent on the surface finish – a low reflectance angle (20 degrees) is usually required for highly reflective surfaces – and matte surfaces typically require a high reflectance angle (85 degrees).
