The national standard "GB/T 5534-2024 Determination of saponification value of animal and vegetable oils and fats" specifies the method for determining the saponification value of animal and vegetable oils. The saponification value is an important indicator for measuring the content of free fatty acids and glycerides in oils or fatty acids. The standard applies to refined animal and vegetable oils and animal and vegetable crude oils, and does not apply to products containing inorganic acids, unless the inorganic acids can be determined separately. The saponification value can also be calculated from the fatty acid data obtained by Gas chromatography, CG analysis. It is necessary to ensure that the sample does not contain impurities or thermal degradation. The standard will be implemented on May 1, 2025, replacing GB/T 5534-2008.
