According to GB/T 9286-1998 "Cross-cut test of Paints and varnish films", this method is designed to evaluate the adhesion of coatings under the grid pattern formed by cutting. The test is carried out by cutting the coating to the substrate and disbonding it with adhesive tape to assess the resistance of the coating to peeling from the substrate. This standard applies to coatings on hard substrates (e.g. steel) and soft substrates (e.g. wood and plastic), but not to thick coatings over 250 μm or textured coatings. The results of the test can be used for pass/fail assessment or grading, and for multi-layer coating systems, the adhesion performance between coatings can also be assessed. This standard emphasizes the importance of sample preparation before the test, coating drying conditions, and the selection and use of cutting tools.
