This standard specifies methods for the direct determination of water content in petroleum products and hydrocarbon compounds using the Karl Fischer Coulomb Titrimetric method, which is suitable for water content ranging from 10 mg/kg to 25,000 mg/kg. The standard includes both direct and indirect determination methods, the latter of which separates water by heating and loads it into the Karl Fischer Titrator for analysis with a drying inert gas. Applicable objects include additives, lubricants, base oils, automatic transmission fluids, hydrocarbon solvents and Miscellaneous petroleum products. This standard provides guidance on the selection of an appropriate sample injection volume to accommodate water content determination from mg/kg to mass percentage levels.
