This standard specifies two methods for the determination of sulfur content in metallic chromium, including the infrared absorption method and the combustion neutralized Titrimetric method. The infrared absorption method is suitable for samples with a sulfur content ranging from 0.005% to 0.045%. The sulfur content is determined by measurement of the infrared absorption of the generated sulfur dioxide at a specific wavelength through the combustion of the sample in a high frequency induction furnace. The combustion neutralized Titrimetric method is suitable for samples with a sulfur content ranging from 0.005% to 0.070%. The sulfur oxide generated by the combustion sample reacts with a sodiumhydrate solution of known concentration to titrate the unreacted sodiumhydrate to determine the sulfur content. The standard also provides specific requirements for the required reagents and materials.
