WARNING: Personnel using this part should have practical experience in formal laboratory work. This part does not cover all possible safety issues. It is the responsibility of the user to take appropriate safety and health measures and ensure compliance with relevant national regulations. This standard specifies a method for the determination of 0.10% to 2.00% carbon content in steel, iron, superalloys and precision alloys by gas volumetric method after combustion in a tube furnace. Carbon content is determined by oxidation of carbon to carbon dioxide by passing an oxygen combustion sample and a flux in a high temperature tube furnace, and then absorbing carbon dioxide in a potassium hydroxide solution. Reagents and materials include oxygen, solvents, active manganese dioxide, etc. If there is no suitable grade of active manganese dioxide, it can be prepared according to the standard.
