Advantages and disadvantages of three methods of film adhesion

Introduction

In the painting industry, the determination of paint film adhesion is one of the important means to evaluate coating mass and performance. Different adhesion measurement methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, and are suitable for different situations. This article will introduce several common methods for the determination of paint film adhesion, including GBT 1720, GB/T 9286 and GB/T 5210, and analyze their characteristics, application scenarios, advantages and disadvantages.

1. GB/T 1720 "Determination of paint film adhesion"

The GBT 1720 standard uses a paint film adhesion Tester to evaluate the adhesion performance of coatings by applying vertical pressure and swirl/spin torque to the paint film. This method is suitable for various coating types and can simulate the adhesion performance of coatings under different stresses. However, this method requires specialized equipment and instruments and is more complicated to operate.

2. GB/T 9286 "Cross-cut test of Paints and varnishes paint films"

The GB/T 9286 standard uses a cross-cut tool to cut the grid pattern on the coating surface, then apply an adhesive tape to tear it off, and evaluate the adhesion by observing the peeling of the paint film from the substrate. This method is simple to operate, does not require special equipment, and is suitable for field use. However, since it is only a qualitative evaluation, accurate adhesion values cannot be provided.

3. GB/T 5210 "Determination of coating adhesion - Pull-open method"

GB/T 5210 adopts the pull-off adhesion test, which is equivalent to the international standard ISO 4624. This method measures adhesion by pulling the adhesion layer between the sample and the substrate. The physical concept of this method is clear, and data on adhesion can be obtained. However, this method is more complicated to operate and needs to wait for the Adhesive to be completely cured for testing. It is not as fast and simple as the Circle-drawing method and the cross-cut method.

4. Advantages and disadvantages of the method and its application

GBT 1720 method: suitable for various coating types, simulating the adhesion performance under different stresses. However, special equipment is required, and the operation is more complicated. It is suitable for painting production environments and provides quantitative adhesion data.

GB/T 9286 method: simple operation, suitable for field use, but can only provide qualitative adhesion evaluation, can not obtain accurate data.

GB/T 5210 method: Determination of adhesion by pulling method has the advantage of clear physical concept, but the operation is more cumbersome and needs to wait for curing, which is suitable for accurate evaluation of adhesion.

In practical applications, the appropriate method can be selected for paint film adhesion testing according to the specific situation. If accurate values are pursued and professional equipment can be operated, the GBT 1720 method is a better choice. For field testing or qualitative evaluation, the GB/T 9286 method is more simple and practical. If accurate data is required and can withstand the complexity of operation, the GB/T 5210 method can provide more specific adhesion values.

5. Conclusion

The determination of paint film adhesion is an important part of painting mass evaluation. Different adhesion measurement methods have their own applicable scenarios and characteristics. Choosing the appropriate method depends on the actual needs. Whether it is the pursuit of quantitative data or rapid evaluation, a suitable solution can be found from these methods. In the painting industry, the comprehensive use of multiple methods to evaluate paint film adhesion helps to fully understand the coating performance and carry out reasonable quality control.
