ASTM D642-20 is a standard test method used to determine the compressire strength of shipping containers, components, and unit loads. This method is designed to evaluate the ability of shipping containers to withstand compressive forces during storage and distribution to ensure their structural integrity and functionality. Testing can be performed with or without cargo in the container and covers the ability to apply a compressive load to the outside of the container surface, diagonal edges, or corners. This standard applies to the testing of individual containers, components, materials, or combinations thereof and can be used to compare container characteristics of different designs or structures. Testing is performed using a fixed head or swirl/spin tester to simulate the pressures that containers may be subjected to during actual transportation. In addition, this standard provides corresponding test methods related to TAPPI T 804 and ISO 12048 to ensure international conformity and comparability.
